Standard 3- Learning Environments

AECT Standard 3 (Learning Environments): Candidates facilitate learning by creating, using, evaluating, and managing effective learning environments.

Artifact 1: Assistive Technology Website

Website
  1. Context Conditions- This website and accompanying artifacts were created for EDET 735- Technology applications for diverse populations taught in the spring of 2018 by Dr. Arslan-Ari
  2. Scope-This website was created to archive and display several assignments created throughout the course. The creation of the website, newsletter, and assistive technology video were each assessed as major assignments within the course.
  3. Role- For these assignments I was the sole designer and creator with peer and instructor feedback.
  4. Instructional Design- From the MRK model this assignment focused on designing the message as well as development of instruction as the artifacts were created. It was important to ensure that all learners, regardless of disabilities, have open access to educational resources.
  5. Related Performance Indicator(s)
    1. Creating- The candidate created a website, video, and newsletter which was accessible for all learners and based on best practices.
    2. Using- The candidate made use of technology components that promote an inclusive learning environment for all learners. Examples include captioning for videos, alt text for images and heading markers to facilitate E-readers.
    3. Assessing/Evaluating- The candidate was able to successfully secure hosting, create and manage a website.
    4. Managing- The candidate was able to successfully secure hosting, create and manage a website.
    5. Ethics- Candidate made use of licensed or open source materials and software throughout the use of the course. All materials were properly sourced and were referenced aproperatly. Considerations were made for those with disabilities.
    6. Diversity of Learners- The candidate fostered a community that empours diverse learners by creating a platform that allows equal access to all learners.
  6. Reflection- These assignments gave me an opportunity to consider how different groups of students access information. By researching the challenges faced by those with disabilities and common accommodations I was able to improve upon my delivery of information. It also taught me techniques that could be incorporated in other products for my following semesters. While I would not claim this as one of my top assignments due to my lack of experience in web creation, I feel that the content was well done and that I learned a lot from it. One large thing that I would improve upon would be the coloring and font of the website to include more contrast as I feel the background and text colors make it difficult to read.

Artifact 2:Skill Badges, Game Integration Plan

Skill Badges
Game Integration Plan
  1. Context Conditions-These two artifacts were created as two separate assignments for EDET 652- Design and Evaluation of Games and Simulations taught by Dr. Besser during the summer of 2019.
  2. Scope-These assignments were designed to promote “gamification” of classroom instruction by the inclusion of game mechanics and theory. These assignments represent two components of this model.
  3. Role- I was the sole creator and Designer of these artifacts with peer and instructor feedback.
  4. Instructional Design-These assignments speak to the learner characteristics, development of instruction and designing the message component of the MRK model.
  5. Related Performance Indicator(s)
    1. Creating- The candidate created virtual badges as well as an instruction plan to incorporate games into the classroom.
    2. Using-The candidate used developmentally appropriate tools such as commercially available games, as well as badge making software to drive instruction.
    3. Assessing/Evaluating- The integration plan incorporates appropriate goal based assessment as well as formative questions to guide learning.
    4. Managing- The use of badge management tools such as Credly allow the candidate to maintain achievement systems in an effective manner.
    5. Ethics- Candidate made use of licensed or open source materials and software throughout the use of the course. All materials were properly sourced and were referenced aproperatly
    6. Diversity of Learners- The candidate created a positive and inclusive environment where learning was viewed as fun.
  6. Reflection- These assignments were some of the more enjoyable tasks that I completed within my graduate program. They allowed me to exercise some creative thinking within my instruction. While these specific artifacts were not used with my classroom setting, they have and continue to influence my regular instruction. I was very pleased with the final product for these artifacts. My only wish was that I could implement my game integration plan, however A lack of sufficiently powerful computers and game licenses prevents this.
